Horeb Christian Disability Fellowship
The Horeb Christian Disability Fellowship is a Ministry that was established to address the spiritual needs, growth and development of person with disabilities in Fiji.
It was formed in 1989 when Setareki Macanawai returned from a one year study in Auckland, New Zealand where his young family was introduced to and involved in a similar group there. Acknowledging the need for such a focus in Fiji and sensing a divine call to initiate this Ministry, Seta as he is commonly called started this work in 1991 as a prayer and outreach group with the support of some teachers from the Fiji School for the Blind and a few Christian friends, some of whom are people with disabilities themselves. At that time the group was known as the Christian Fellowship for the Disabled (CFFD) and was working closely with the New Zealand Group. In 1993 the group change its name to Disable Outreach for Christ (DOC) Ministry with the view run its programmes more independently. In those years, DOC Ministry was operating out of the Fiji disabled People’s Association (FDPA) former office at 355 Waimanu Rd, Suva and moved to its present location in 2004.
However, DOC Ministry later change its name to Horeb Christian Disability Ministry in 2004 to reflect a positive and inclusive approach to addressing the spiritual needs of person with disabilities. Horeb captures the experience of Prophet Elijah on the way to Mt. Horeb as well as his personal encounter with God there [1 Kings 19:1-13]. Disability underlines the primary focus of this fellowship on people with disabilities whilst Christians reflects Christ’s place, teachings and promises as given in the Holy Scriptures. The Horeb Christian Disability Fellowship Office is located at the FNCDP Complex, Brown Street, Suva and has become a local church in April 2008 with a Board of Elders a Group of Coordinators responsible for different areas of Ministry.
